Realm of Ember – Tactics and Folklore
Realm of Ember is a tactical fantasy RPG that feels like a love letter to the classic strategy games of the 1990s, but with modern quality-of-life improvements. The game takes place in a kingdom called Velindra, where a dormant volcano has started to release strange energies that twist animals and plants. The king has called upon mercenaries, mages, and warriors to investigate, and your party is one of the groups that answers the call.
The combat is turn-based and grid-based. Positioning matters immensely. A rogue attacking from behind deals extra damage, while a warrior can block a chokepoint to protect fragile mages. The game gives you a wide variety of classes and allows you to customise each character with different skills and equipment. The learning curve is gentle at first, but later battles require real strategic thinking.
One of the best elements is the party member interactions. Between battles, characters talk in camp, share stories, and react to your decisions. Your choices affect their loyalty, which in turn affects their performance in combat. This adds a role-playing depth that goes beyond number-crunching.
The atmosphere is classic high fantasy. The art style is hand-drawn with warm colours, and the musical score uses orchestral instruments to create a feeling of adventure and danger. The story draws inspiration from Slavic and Celtic folklore, which makes it feel distinct from generic medieval settings. There are mentions of old gods, forgotten rituals, and a deep connection between the land and its people.
Replayability is high because of the branching story. There are dozens of side quests, secret classes, and multiple endings. You can easily spend 60 hours on a single playthrough, and many players will want to restart with a different party composition to see the other side of the story.
Platform availability is impressive. Realm of Ember is on PC via Steam and GOG, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and 5, and Xbox One and Series X|S. It runs well on the Switch in portable mode, which is a big plus for players who like to play on the go.
The price is CAD 54.99 for the standard edition. A "Complete Edition" with all DLC costs CAD 69.99 and includes extra story chapters and character skins. The game is occasionally discounted to around CAD 39.99 during major sales.
The ESRB rating is T for Teen, which means it is suitable for players aged 13 and up. There is fantasy violence and some mild thematic elements, but no gore or strong language. It is a good choice for teenagers who enjoy strategy games.
The controls are well mapped for both controller and keyboard. On PC, the interface is clean and you can easily access all menus. On consoles, the cursor is smooth and battles are comfortable to play with a gamepad.
Realm of Ember succeeds because it respects the player's intelligence. The combat is challenging, the story is engaging, and the world feels alive. It is a great addition to any strategy fan's library, and one of the best games we have included in our Canadian selection.
